Ten killed in 2 road accidents in US Nagar and Tehri districts

RUDRAPUR: Ten people were killed in two separate car accidents in Tehri and US Nagar districts in two days, police said.

Five people including four women were killed after the car they were travelling in fell into a gorge on Sendul-Konti-Kireth road in Tehri district on Friday, police said.

District disaster management officer Brijesh Bhatt said, “According to the primary informatio­n, the victims were on their way from Raj Gaon to Ghansali. We are ascertaini­ng the identities of the victims. The bodies taken out of the car were taken to a health facility in Beleshwar for autopsy.”

In another incident on late Thursday night, five people including a woman and three children were killed after their car fell into Sharda canal in Khatima of Udham Singh Nagar.

Their bodies were recovered and sent to a government hospital in Kahtima for post-mortem on Friday morning.

Ravindra Bisht, station officer, Jhankaiya police station in Khatima said, “We received informatio­n from villagers about the accident at 11.15 pm on Thursday. We rushed to the spot and recovered riders by breaking the windows of the car. We immediatel­y took them to the government hospital in Khatima where they were declared dead.”

The deceased were identified as Draupadi Chand (42), an employee of Lohiahead power house in Khatima, Mohan Singh Dhami (42), of Nagara Terai village, Jyoti (12), Deepika (5), and

Sunu (7).

According to police, Mohan Singh owned the car and was driving at the time of the accident. Jyoti was Draupadi’s daughter, while Deepika and Sonu were the children of Draupadi’s brother Mohan Chand of Anjaniya village under Khatima police station.

Bisht said, “Draupadi’s brother Mohan had to go to Pithoragar­h on Friday morning with her wife.

He wanted his children to stay with Draupadi. Draupadi had gone to his brother’s house to take the children Deepika and Sonu.”

They left his house at about 9 pm. Mohan rang Draupadi to know whether they reached her house.

Her mobile came switched off. When they didn’t reach the house and Draupadi didn’t respond, Mohan set out in search of them. On the way, he spotted the car in the canal. He informed the police, he said.

IN ANOTHER INCIDENT ON LATE THURSDAY NIGHT, FIVE PEOPLE INCLUDING A WOMAN AND THREE CHILDREN WERE KILLED AFTER THEIR CAR FELL INTO SHARDA CANAL IN KHATIMA OF UDHAM SINGH NAGAR.
