PRAYAGRAJ: Ballistic report has confirmed that the weapons recovered from the three assailants were used in gunning down gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Khalid Azeem aka Ashraf while in police custody on April 15.

Police are likely to soon file chargesheet against the three accused. Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted for probing the murders of mafia brothers received the ballistic report from FSL on Monday.

The report confirmed that sophisticated firearms-- Turkey made Girsan and Zigana along with Munger made pistols were used for gunning down Atiq and Ashraf at Motilal Nehru (Colvin) Divisional Hospital.

SIT will now include the report in its investigation as scientific evidence. However, SIT is still to receive reports of mobiles recovered from assailants and DVRs that were seized.

The three-member SIT is headed by ADCP (crime) Satish Chandra. The SIT officials seized three firearms from the spot which included Girsan and Zigana pistols of foreign make along with a Munger made local pistol. The SIT has also collected blood samples, empty and live cartridges and other evidence from the crime scene at Colvin Hospital.

All samples including the firearms were sent for examination to FSL. Police officials said that ballistic report received on Monday evening confirmed that assailants used all three firearms from close range. Report of blood samples collected from spot also confirmed that it was human blood, they added.

It is worth mentioning that Girsan and Zigana pistols are banned in India and they are fetched through illegal firearm smugglers from Pakistan. Each pistol costs between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh and they can fire 15 shots at a time. Assailant Lavlesh Tiwari was using Zigana while Sunny Singh had Girsan pistol. Third assailant Arun Maurya fired shots with a local pistol. Police claimed that 13 shots were fired from Zigana while 11 from Girsan. Four shots were fired from the local pistol while one bullet was trapped in the chamber of the firearm.

Meanwhile, police may now soon file chargesheet in sensational double murders of mafia brothers. SIT will soon complete its investigations in the case and was waiting for FSL report.
