PRAYAGRAJ : Despite getting all backing from the government, the number of students in government-run secondary schools in the state is not increasing as expected, indicate the data of the state secondary education department.

Although there are 2,427 government-run secondary schools in the state, the composite grant was issued for 2,306 schools from the State Project Office of Samagra Shiksha (Secondary) office on April 26.

The order from the director, Samagra Shiksha (secondary), U.P., issued in this regard also shared data regarding the students enrolled in these schools and the funds sanctioned for each, a copy of which is with HT.

Data show that of these 2,306 schools, there are only 65 schools where more than one thousand students are studying at the moment while there are 1,125 schools where less than 100 students are enrolled.

Around 364 schools among them have 251 to 1,000 students, while 752 schools have 101 to 250 students, reveal the data.

A maximum of six schools of Lalitpur and five of Bijnor are included in the list of schools having over 1000 students. Three schools each from Shahjahanpur and Banda are also there in the elite club.

If one looks at the UP Board Exams-2024 results declared on April 20, it clearly shows that though the number of government schools in the state has increased but the number of students in them has decreased.

In 2023, 1,82,297 students from 2,355 government high schools appeared for the class 10 examination and 1,01,471 students from 845 government intermediate colleges appeared for the class 12 examinations.

In 2024, the number of government high schools increased to 2,427 but the number of class 10 students decreased to 1,73,630. Similarly, in 2024, the number of government intermediate colleges increased to 892 but the number of class 12 students who registered for the exam was only 93,716.

Assistant accounts officer, Samagra Shiksha Abhiyaan, Vinay Prakash confirmed that the composite grant has been received which will soon be sent to the schools concerned.

As per government norms, schools having more than 1000 students would be getting Rs 1 lakh each, schools with students between 251 and 1000 would be getting Rs 75,000 each while those schools having students numbering between 101 and 250 would be receiving Rs 50,000 each while those with less than 100 students would be getting just 25,000 each.

The composite grant issued under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyaan is used to streamline the facilities and procure various needs of the schools that directly facilitate better learning.
