Sans any words, the experience of witnessing the story of a boy and a tree, becomes special when narrated through puppetry. The show, When All Was Green, will make you relive your childhood, as you rediscover the relationship between nature and mankind.

Conceived by The Key Theatre from Israel, in 2012, this show creates an equivalence between trees and books. “The story The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein was our inspiration,” says Dikla Katz, co-director of the play.

Kats adds that she and her co-director Avi Zlicha wanted to talk about the choices that humans make and the price they have to pay for them.

She says, “There are 2 elements from our city Tel Aviv, that inspired our plot and visuals - discarded books and picturesque trees. We collected 100 books from the streets of Tel Aviv and recycled them into the set, puppets and objects, to tell this story.”

Through the use of old books, recycled bindings and yellowing pages, this puppet show imaginatively discusses some important issues that mankind faces at large. “The themes of relationship and friendship is explored at many layers. It evokes thought and discussion, in the absence of any words,” adds Katz.

Table top puppets will be used to emote human-like movements, as it happens in animation. The directors inform that a lot of focus has been on detailing. “I believe that if a play is good, the intentions are clear and drama is there, children become fascinated and curious. Our presentation will make both the children and the adults ask questions about themselves,” says Katz.
