Tips to make your home festivalready

- IANS (With inputs by interior designers Sangeeta Kapoor and Jade Davies)

The festive season is almost upon us, and that means it’s a good time to not just tidy up but also redecorate your home to set the mood for merry-making. Wondering how? Here’s help:

■ Fill with colours: Bring out the colourful bedding, decorative cushions, rugs, pottery, old photographs, souvenir and old gifts, and display them.

■ Accessorise right: Buy that hammered vase or Victorian lamp that you have been eyeing all along. Set a little corner with your prized accessories. They can pep up a dull room.

■ Keep moisture away: The dampness of the monsoon has set into the wood, the walls and the upholstery. Pull your sofas, beds, and wardrobes six inches from the wall to let them breathe. Let the sunlight in for the dampness to dry and recede. ■ Fragrant fresh: Place a big urn of mogra, candle diffusers and fragrances across rooms. Or, let scented candles burn for a bit.

■ Go bold with gold: Bring on the shimmer and glimmer of your brass elements. Polish them so they gleam against a bolder colour palette. Experiment with bolder colours like deep reds, burnt oranges, amber and sunny mustard.

■ Table setting: A well-set table will complement the delicious food. Add a bunch of flowers and sprigs on to napkin holders, and floating candles into glass bowls filled with water for a pretty table centrepiece.

■ Rearrange the living room furniture: Make it comfortable for guests to huddle together. Put sofas together with lounge chairs for a relaxed atmosphere.
