Gurugram traffic cops go beyond their call of duty to fill potholes in the city
Life is precious, and road safety, imperative. It seems that’s the thought driving two of Gurugram’s traffic police officers, assistant subinspector (EASI) Hansraj and constable Vikram Singh, to mend broken potholes in the city. It’s a job they aren’t supposed to do, but they felt they needed to!
Hansraj’s noble act was captured in a video — when the traffic personnel was posted at the intersection of sectors 4 and 7 — by a passerby who shared it on Twitter. “I salute to true spirit of Officers of @gurgaonpolice. They work to their best every day. Example is ASI Hansraj (ZO of Sector 4-7 Xing),” wrote @greenterminal.
In Haryana Vision Zero report, more than 1,200 accidents due to faulty road infrastructure have been reported in the last three years.
Hansraj, who has been a traffic cop for three years and is on duty from 7am to 9pm, took a container from a tea-seller to fetch mud and bricks, and began filling the pothole. “The traffic would move at a snail’s pace because of the pothole. Two-wheeler phisal bhi sakta tha usme. I filled it so that no untoward incident shall occur. It [just] took me a few minutes,” says the 56-yearold inspector, who shares that he is up for retirement in two years, and hopes to inspire people with his deed. “I hope I am able to set an example for the younger generation.”
Singh, who was posted at Basai Chowk, Sector 10, is all for saving lives, too. The 31-year-old called a contractor and covered the pothole using a shovel. “People’s cars break down because of potholes and that’s problematic for us, too.” His happiness knew no bounds after he was rewarded for his act recently. “Thodi mehnat toh lagti hai but aise gaddhe hum aksar bharte rehte hain. The award is a recognition of our efforts. It’s my first in five years,” he smiles.
Hansraj and constable Vikram have been felicitated with a commendation certificate and a cash reward of ~5,000.
