ALIA IS SELFMADE: SONI RAZDAN

- Sneha Mahadevan

After Raazi, veteran actor Soni Razdan is back on screen with Yours Truly, which was recently showcased at the Busan International Film Festival.

The film opened to a great response at the festival and talking about it, Soni says, “It was a wonderful experience and they have this kind of evolved cinema-going audience. I realised that along with the slightly older audience, a lot of youngsters related to the movie and they wanted to meet and chat with me after the film. This kind of response was cool and exciting for me because I didn’t know what to expect.”

While daughter Alia Bhatt thinks Soni is the best actor, the latter is in awe of her daughter’s success, which she says has been in “leaps and bounds”. Soni says, “What Alia has achieved is commendable. I’m so proud of her. She has schooled herself and she is self-made.”

Anybody can say what they like but I know what the truth is. She got breaks and the opportunities but the hard work and the talent, has all been her. She hasn’t had any great support in that department. She did not go to an acting school. And contrary to what anybody says, I did not give her any acting tips; neither did Mahesh (Bhatt, husband). I believe acting is a journey. There is no way that I can tell you how to perform, because acting is not something that can be told to someone”, she says.

Alia is currently in New York where she is supposedly spending time with beau Ranbir Kapoor. While Soni recently spoke about her equation with Ranbir, she says she doesn’t have the time to think of Alia’s personal life. “I don’t get affected by all that is written about her. I don’t even read it. It is too much for me to care about who is talking about Alia and her personal life, with due respect to everybody. I barely have the time to follow my own life,” she says.

Soni was last seen with daughter Alia in Raazi but she does accept that she hasn’t received great offers to be seen very often on screen “I would love to do more work. It’s just the luck of the draw so sometimes good roles come your way, sometimes they don’t. I won’t say I haven’t got any but they have been too far and few in between. I am not complaining or anything. I hope

it changes.”
