‘ALCOHOLISM LEADS TO ABUSE’

- Rishabh Suri

Filmmaker Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari is concerned over the surge in cases of domestic violence, amid the lockdown and feels the opening of liquor shops might worsen the problem.

Confessing that she thought twice before putting her concerns out on Twitter, she says, “I have seen that domestic abuse is a huge thing because of alcoholism. I saw it in the house of someone I know. You are in a society where alcohol is a form of shying away from handling the situation. Right now there are so many stories about losing jobs, not having enough money to sustain, men find a way in alcohol, and when that stress is not managed correctly, it leads to abuse at home.”

Tiwari, 40, believes that the problem also leads to the children growing up in an environment, where they see the man of the house indulge in violence. “It leads to destruction of families and mental instability, of not just yourself, but everyone around you,” she adds.

The filmmaker spent the past one and half months finishing scripts as well as her debut novel. “We are working on the screenplay of a biopic on Narayan (founder of Infosys ) and Sudha Murthy, which I will direct. By June, I should also finish my novel,” Tiwari signs off.
