Majority of AAP’s LS candidates are social workers and activists
The biggest chunk — 47 per cent — of its Lok Sabha candidates announced so far comprises social workers and activists, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has said.
The share of academicians and retired officials is 13 per cent each. While 10 per cent of the nominees are lawyers, six per cent are doctors, four per cent and journalists. Another four per cent of the candidates are artists, while the remaining three per cent come from other professional backgrounds, the party has said in an annalysis .
The party has, in three lists, announced 70 candidates from 16 states in the country. Of the seven Parliamentary seats in Delhi, the AAP has announced five nominees.
They are: former journalists Ashutosh ( Chandni Chowk) and Jarnail Singh (West Delhi), Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Rajmohan Gandhi (East Delhi), JNU professor Anand Kumar (North East Delhi) and social activist Mahender Singh (North West Delhi).
The AAP is yet to announce its candidates for the remaining two Delhi seats: New Delhi and South Delhi. The two major parties — Congress and BJP — are yet to release their first list of candidates for the seven Delhi seats.
Overall, the maximum AAP candidates announced so far come from Maharashtra (23%), followed by Madhya Pradesh (19%), Odisha (11%), Uttar Pradesh (10%), Haryana (9%) and Delhi (7%), besides other states.
“Each individual selected has for long strived for change in their immediate surrounding and it is time for them to do it in a larger group. Every candidate is set to bring fresh ideas and positive solutions to their constituencies,” the party study says. ONIR JOINS AAP
