MG Road re-carpeting stalled again, contractor blames rain

GURGAON: The contractor has once again stopped the recarpeting work of MehrauliGurgaon (MG) Road due to the recent rains.

Contractor KCC Buildcom Private Limited, which was awarded the tender in JulyAugust last year, cited the winter and the recent unexpected rains as reasons that disturbed the re-carpeting work.

“The work on the 3km stretch is still incomplete and it will take another week to lay the top layer,” said the contractor.

He further said that the authority had not paid him entirely and the workers are disappointed.

“The workers are demanding their salaries but we are unable to pay them,” said the contractor.

To this, officials at the Public Works Department (PWD) suggested that the contractor’s reasons were valid for the delay.

“We acted fast, but the recent heavy rains disturbed the work. We have asked the contractor to finish the work by Saturday,” said a senior engineer Public Works Department (PWD), who is in-charge of the work/project.

However, some are of the opinion that the delay is due to lack of coordination between the contractor and the department.

“The reason of winter and rains are just an eyewash and mere excuse to cover up the real issue — the regular payment of the contractor. The executing authority and the contractor both do not work in healthy coordination, which has been resulting in poor quality of work. The potholes and rubbles seen on the road, where the lower layers of bituminous is laid already, is the result of poor quality of materials used and lack of monitoring,” said a former public health engineer, on condition of anonymity.

Earlier, HT had highlighted about the potholes that developed on the newly carpeted MG road near Sikanderpur and other areas.
