MODI ON CRIME IN UP

-

CLAIM

1 “Azam Khan’s buffaloes are more important…45 % of all crimes in India happen under your (Mulayam Singh Yadav) nose.”

FACT

A total of 60,41,559 complaints were received by the police across the country under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Special and Local Laws (SLL) in 2012. Of this, Uttar Pradesh accounted for 18,24,160 which is 30.19%, considerably lower than what Modi had claimed. The cognisable crimes registered in India in 2012 added up to 23,87,188 cases, of which UP had 1,98,093. This works out to 8.3 % only. Gujarat with 1,30,121 toted up 5.5 % of the all-India total. However, crimes registered under SLL in UP numbered 16,26,067 which is 44.5 % of India’s total under local laws. Modi selected the most convenient true figure but did not mention its specific context. He then extrapolated it to cover all crimes which is far from the truth.

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

Occasion

Narendra Modi, Gujarat chief minister and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, addressed an election rally on March 2. In the high-stakes battle for the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, Modi has been in a straight fight with Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, and vice-versa, during their public meetings. In Lucknow, Modi slammed the SP government for its record on communal violence, lack of reliable power supply and rising incidence of crime, playing on the popular belief that Akhilesh Yadav’s government was not serious about tackling crime. He mocked the state government for the bizarre decision of the state police to press dog squads and crime branch sleuths to find minister Azam Khan’s stolen buffaloes.
