The DND Flyway in coordination with the Noida police has equipped emergency vehicles of the Gautam Budh Nagar traffic police with stateof- the- art first aid kits and neck collars.

The move has been initiated to make the best use of the “golden hour” that is crucial for an accident victim before an ambulance arrives and the person is transported to a hospital for treatment.

The kits will help the first responders ( police control room — PCR — vehicles and police vehicles) in providing care to road accident victims till an ambulance arrives.

The kits are compact and prepared by professionals and are user friendly.

Over 300 police personnel in the district have already been provided with “first responder training” and in the months to come, another 200 police personnel are to be trained for the purpose.

DND Flyway spokesperson Anwar Abbasi said, the first responders have been taught when and how to use a cervical collar, which is used to immobilize the neck during suspected head and spine injury.

“Spine injuries are very frequent after a motor cycle accident or vehicle collision. Though the driver is wearing a seatbelt the neck is impacted since it is not supported. The victim has to be immobilized after applying the collar and then shifted to the hospital on a stretcher.

This is the first time PCR vehicles in India have been equipped with collars, which are critical for preventing paralysis and disability in accident victims,” he said.

The bandages are of superior quality and are in sterile packaging.

The cold compress pack once crushed by hand becomes as cold as ice and helps reduce swelling and pain. The triangular bandages that are used in many ways, commonly used for splinting and making a sling are also in the kit.

“The rescue sheet opens up to the size of a bed sheet and is used to cover patients in hypother mia and provide them warmth. Its tensile strength also enables it to be used as a makeshift stretcher when folded into half,” said Abbasi.

The cardio pulmonary resuscitation face shield protects the first responder from direct contact with the victim,” said Abbasi.

He said the DND Flyway will soon start training school children to handle victims as first responders and administer basic first aid , whether at home, school or elsewhere.
