3-storey building tilts dangerously near Lalita Park
A major accident was averted by the district management authorities on Tuesday after a residential building in east Delhi’s West Vinod Nagar began to lean forward. Senior Delhi government officials said the building had been vacated and was being demolished.
The incident was brought to light on Tuesday morning after a distress call claiming that a residential building had began to lean forward. Several teams of the disaster management were rushed to the spot.
“The building collapse scare was merely 4- km away from Lalita Park due to which special precautions were taken. Apart from Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, CATS, EDMC & BSES, Quick Response Vehicle (QRTV) of DDMA were rushed to the spot,” said an official of the Delhi government.
In 2010, 71 people died in a building collapse in Lalita Park, an “unauthorised regularised” colony in east Delhi. Investigations found that the building was built on weak foundation.
Investigation revealed that the three-storied building was leaning to a side. It was evacuated along with neighbouring buildings by the disaster management officials with the help of Delhi Police. “The building had cracks, which were amplified by the recent tremors felt in the city. A supporting pillar started tearing, which resulted in leaning of building,” the official added.
A manlift/hydraulic platform was arranged from Delhi Metro. “The area was cordoned off and demolition started,” said east civic body official.
