A suicide note left behind by the woman, a resident of Shakarpur, said she loved her husband but he didn’t love her back. Her family has accused the man of having an extra-marital affair.

A 30-year-old woman allegedly murdered her two sons (aged two and five years) before committing suicide in east Delhi’s Shakarpur area on Thursday night, police said.

According to the police, the woman reportedly poisoned her kids and then hanged herself from the ceiling fan of her bedroom. Before committing suicide, she scribbled a note on the bedroom’s wall stating that she loved her husband but he didn’t not love her back.

According to the police, the woman’s husband was not at home when the incident happened.

“The husband reportedly reached home around 11 pm from his office. He rang the door bell but no one answered. He peeked in from the window and found his wife hanging from the ceiling fan. He then raised an alarm and called his neighbours, who helped him break open the door,” a senior police officer said.

On entering the house, he reportedly found his wife hanging from the ceiling fan and his kids on the floor with frothing in their mouth. “He rushed them (kids and his wife) to the hospital but all three were declared dead on arrival. One of the neighbours made a PCR call and a team reached the spot for an inspec- tion,” police said.

While asphyxiation appears to be the cause of death in the woman’s case, the two children were poisoned. “The children were frothing in the mouth, so it appears that the woman gave poisoned their food before hanging herself. The bodies have been sent for a postmortem examination and the cause and time of death will be ascertained once the final report is out,” police said.

The woman’s brother alleges that her husband had an extra marital relationship with his wife’s sister, which strained their marital relationship “My sister was aware of his extra-marital relationship. She really loved him but he did not care about her. He did not even care about the children. It is his indifference that compelled her to commit suicide,” the woman’s brother said.

After the incident, the police have initiated an inquiry into the matter. “Since the couple had been married for just seven years, we have initiated an inquiry into the matter. While the woman’s side is alleging that her husband was involved in an extra marital affair, which compelled her to kill herself, her husband alleges that she was mentally unstable. We need to verify both claims before reaching a logical conclusion. The investigation in the matter is on,” police said.
