DELHI POLICE ADD ‘TRACK ME’ FEATURE TO HIMMAT APP
NEW DELHI: In revving up measures for women’s safety, the Delhi Police will soon add a ‘Track Me’ feature in its existing mobile app Himmat, that will let a person’s whereabouts be tracked in real time should they choose so.
While the earlier GPS tracking system in the app was only able to locate the origin of a distress message, the upgrade will let the police control room monitor the person’s movement, said the police.
“The new addition to the system, will help police to conveniently locate the person in distress, even as the position keeps changing,” a senior police officer said.
A person opting for the feature will have to select from three given time spans-10 minutes, 15 minutes and 30 minutes - that she would normally take to reach the destination. The GPS tracking will go on for that period, and it can be reset if the journey takes longer than the chosen duration. If it is not re-selected, the tracking will stop automatically, police said.
“We have put the feature on a testing mode and have given it to a few of our officers for trial. The trial will be on for over a month before it is finally launched. All the shortcomings will be noted and the required changes will be incorporated before the launch,” police said.
The Delhi Police launched Himmat on January 1 in view of rising crimes against women in the Capital.
Soon, the app is set to have another that will enable women complainants to file complaints through it without having to go to the police station.
