NEW DELHI: Two brothers — ranked among Delhi’s top 10 notorious robbers with involvement in over 100 cases — and their accomplice were arrested after a brief gunbattle with the police in outer Delhi on Wednesday .

Police said the brothers were already booked under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for allegedly running an organised syndicate of snatchers and robbers.

The arrested robbers were riding a motorcycle when the police team chased them for over one kilometer on the arterial road between the Rohini West Metro Station and Ayodhya Chowk.

The criminals had managed to dodge two police barricades during the chase. But police personnel deployed at the third barricade managed to overpower the three by kicking their motor- cycle after which they fell off the bike.

During the chase, one of the criminals had fired a bullet at the police party comprising Sis Pawan Tomar and KP Singh and three constables.

The bullet missed constable Sandeep’s body by a whisker. The police team fired in self-defence. During the entire operation, Sandeep showed exemplary courage and presence of mind that led to the arrest of the three robbers.

The three were identified as Rajesh alias Didli, his brother Ajay aka Genda, and Anil, all residents of Mangolpuri in outer Delhi.

The three were planning a robbery in Rohini area. The police received information about their presence in the area and laid a trap.

Two pistols, four cartridges, four robbed gold chains and a stolen Bajaj Discover motorcycle were recovered.

Vikramjit Singh, DCP (outer), said Didli was one of the most notorious robbers in Delhi. He had been arrested in 2015 but was released on bail in November after a short stint of about six months in jail.

“Even though he was booked under MCOCA, Didli continued his criminal activities after coming out of jail. His brother is involved in over 100 cases. Anil has committed over 17 robberies and snatching and was declared a proclaimed offender by the court,” said Singh.
