NEW DELHI: Delhi University campuses pulsated with excitement, nervous chatter and song and dance routines of ice-breaking sessions on Wednesday as the new batch of undergraduate students started its three-year journey, armed with sky-high cutoffs.
Most colleges welcomed freshers, popularly referred to as fucchas, with orientation and interaction sessions.
“There were some really fun introduction sessions that were happening so that we could get to know the seniors better. They (seniors) asked me for my hobbies. When I told them I sing, they asked to me to sing,” said Simar Singh, a first-year student at Shri Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College. Gurleen Kaur, also a fresher, said seniors welcomed them at the gate with roses.
A few students came prepared to attend classes on the first day, while many others said they first wanted to get a feel of the university. “I really wanted to start my first class on a good note. So, I read up about the syllabus. I have a fair idea of the topics that will be taught in the college,” said Aditi from Miranda House.
Others were keen to make the best out of the opportunities to learn. “The seniors and teachers helped us in knowing the college better. I am excited, but also nervous as everyone seems to be so good. I will join one of the language courses being offered by other colleges. It will make me better,” said Tanusha Kaushik, a student of IP College for Women.
Colleges geared up for the new batch, while admission under the fifth and final cutoff list is also underway. “We had our orientation on Tuesday and today all classes were held,” said Hansraj College principal Rama.
Lady Shri Ram College (LSR) said they would hold demo classes to introduce students to Generic Electives Courses (GEC) they can opt for under the Choice Based Credit System implemented last year.
GEC is the inter-disciplinary course where students are required to study four courses in a year, two each in the first and second years.
“A student from any stream can take up GEC from other stream. We will give demo classes on Thursday and Friday for all GEC in our college,” said an LSR official.
