KNOW MORE ABOUT MODERATION POLICY

- n

What is moderation?

Moderation is the process of adding/subtracting percentage marks from the total score of students based on the difficulty level of different sets of question papers, among other factors. It is carried out to bring uniformity in the evaluation process.

How it is applied?

Marks scored by students are changed keeping the difficulty level of different sets of papers in mind, marking standards of different examiners, or the difficulty a student might face in answering a question in the specified time. For example: if there are three sets of papers and set A has difficulty level of 90%, B has 80% and C has 70%, through moderation it will be decided how much each set has to achieve to be at par with the different sets.

Since when is it being applied?

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has been carrying out this practice since 1992 after multiple sets of question papers were introduced.

Is moderation the same as grace marks?

No, grace marks are awarded to students to improve the pass percentage.

How does it affect the score of a student?

Under the policy, the score of a student who has secured 80% or 85%, the marks can be raised to 95% but the one who has scored 95% or more doesn’t get extra marks. Many states have started raising marks in the name of moderation.
