TIPS ON PARENTING, FROM A DOC AND MOM

- Rhythma.kaul@htlive.in

The mind of a new parent is full of questions to which there are no clear answers. Parents struggle over how to get their child to be polite, or stop fighting, get homework done without the need for hours of nagging, how to deal with teenage hormones, or help kids deal with bullies.

Often, they turn to their own parents, who dole out advice based on their experience. Or they turn to friends with kids who are experiencing similar anxieties. To soothe the frayed nerves of such harried parents, Dr Tanu Shree Singh offers Keep Calm And Mommy On.

It’s her second book — after The Missing Step — and the author combines her training in psychology with her practical experience as the hands-on mother to two teenage boys, to discuss the challenges and delights that today’s parents face.

Dr Singh is a lecturer in psychology too and has a keen interest in the area of positive psychology, in which she also has a PhD. This has likely helped her understand the psychology of children far better than the average parent. The book was born of her own personal experience in dealing with her boys, born two years apart, and in interacting with new moms around her. The book is primarily a list of suggestions that Singh says worked fabulously for her. There is no set path, she stresses; no point in suffering through comparisons with other parents. Each experience, like each child, is unique, and there is no reason to get bogged down by criticism or by others’ judging your parenting skills, she adds. Read this wise, funny and charming book for handy lists, hilarious anecdotes and practical solutions to your dilemmas. It’s officially out on May 31. Meanwhile, keep calm and mommy on.
