Sanitation workers on strike in south Delhi to protest beating of staff
NEW DELHI A group of sanitation workers in South Delhi Municipal Corporation went on strike on Sunday and did not lift garbage after a worker was allegedly beaten up in Chattarpur by a municipal councillor three days ago.
Rajendra Mewati, general secretary of United Front of MCD Employees Associations, said a BJP councillor’s husband asked a sanitation worker to do his personal work. “When he refused, the councillor’s husband started beating him. We will meet the commissioner on this issue tomorrow. We are on strike,” he said, refusing to disclose how many workers have gone on strike.
SDMC mayor Kamaljeet Sherawat denied any strike in area. “I verified the claims. No such incident has happened. In fact, the sanitation workers did participate in special sanitation drives on Sunday,” she said.
The Aam Aadmi Party was quick to react to the situation with its spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj taking to Twitter.
“There are heaps of garbage in South Delhi, but not reported in newspapers or TV. Sanitation workers are on strike . ... A few days ago another BJP councillor manhandled officer of Horticulture MCD, there was strike for few days but it was not reported in news. After strike and protests by MCD officers, police reluctantly registered FIR against Councillor but no arrest .... ,” he wrote in a series of tweets.
