East corp says ‘no work, no pay’ as strike continues
and public places of east Delhi continued to wear a dirty look on Thursday, with a protest by workers of East Delhi Municipal Corporation entering its second day.
The strike was called by a group of workers for non-payment of arrears, bonus and for cashless medical insurance.
On Thursday, the second day of the strike, the east civic body said it will deduct wages of workers who had not turned up.
“None of the roads near my house have been swept. Garbage has also piled up on the roadside. We are fed up of repeated strikes,” said Anita Gupta, a resident of Geeta Colony.
Members of East Delhi RWA Joint Front said they will meet the striking workers and Mayor Neema Bhagat on Friday. “We have asked for an appointment with the chief minister as well as the deputy CM. East Delhi can’t suffer from financial constrains,” said BS Vohra, president of the federation.
At least 1,000 sanitation workers in ten municipal wards of east Delhi didn’t report to work on Thursday.
A senior official said the commissioner has ordered ‘no work, no salary’ for striking workers. “Their demands are legitimate but their method is wrong,” said the official.
