NEW DELHI: A man tore off the ear lobe of a 47-year-old woman while pulling out her gold earrings on a busy road in west Delhi, leaving her grievously injured and in need of plastic surgery, police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred near Uttam Nagar (east) Metro station at around 6pm on Tuesday, when Vandana Sharma, who lives nearby, was returning home from a relative’s funeral in north Delhi’s Shakti Nagar. “She got off a bus near Uttam Nagar bus terminal and was walking back home when she was targeted,” said her husband Manoj Sharma.

Vandana said a man approached her from behind and used both his hands to pluck her earrings. “One earring tore through my left ear and came off. Since the other earring wasn’t coming off, he kept pulling it till the ear lobe tore,” she said.

GURGAON: Show-cause notices have been issued to three contractual staff members of the Civil Hospital, Gurgaon, by the health department after a 25-year-old woman was forced to deliver her baby girl outside the emergency ward on February 9.

She was allegedly denied admission for failing to produce an Aadhaar card.

According to officials, Dr Mohini, a gynaecologist, staff nurse Manita and Emergency Medical Technician Manoj have been given one week to submit a reply as to ‘why their services should not be terminated’.

Officials added that the in-charge of the emergency ward and the labour ward have been let off with a warning but have been asked to give an explanation.

Health department officials said that Dr Mohini was on duty during the incident, Manita took the patient for getting her ultrasound test done, while Manoj had taken her to the hospital in an ambulance but dropped her at the courtyard rather than the emergency ward.

An inquiry committee was constituted including Dr Suraj Bhan Kamboj and Dr VK Bansal of Haryana health department. They are expected to submit a report to health minister Anil Vij this week. The department stated on February 11 that Aadhaar card will not be mandatory for availing any medical service.
