Illegal liquor was seized from a public toilet in north Delhi’s Timarpur area during a joint inspection by the Delhi Commission for Women and the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DSUIB).

The women’s panel said they had received complaints from local women that illegal liquor was being sold from a toilet complex at Sanjay Basti in Timarpur.

On receiving complaints about the bad condition of public toilets, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had directed DUSIB officials to visit public toilets every morning at 6 am for seven days.

The women’s panel was to choose the sites for public inspection and its representatives were to accompany the DUSIB team during the visits, an official from the women’s panel said.

On Monday, the DCW team discovered a stack of illegal liquor in the caretaker’s room during an inspection.

“The caretaker was missing and there was a music system inside his room. This substantiated the allegations of the

women who said the caretaker sells illegal liquor and plays loud music throughout the night,” the panel said.

DCW chief Swati Maliwal called police and two men were caught. Police registered an FIR. The DUSIB said the company handling the toilet would be changed with immediate effect, the official said.

“The surprise inspection is having an impact and many toilets are being cleaned overnight. This exercise should be repeated to keep the system at its toes. Proper sanitation and safety in toilets is non-negotiable,” she said.

Last year in December, the DCW and police raided a home in outer Delhi’s Narela area and seized illegal liquor. A DCW volunteer was allegedly beaten up and her clothes were torn by locals who sold illegal liquor in the area.
