EYEWITNESSES SAID THE DRIVER PANICKED AFTER HITTING THE COP AND TRIED TO SPEED AWAY, HITTING THE TWO RAMJAS STUDENTS

NEWDELHI: A 19-year-old Ramjas College student was killed while his college mate and a Delhi Police constable were injured after a speeding car hit them in north Delhi’s Maurice Nagar on Friday morning. The errant driver fled the accident spot, leaving the car behind, police officials said.

Harendra Singh, additional deputy commissioner of police (north), said the accident took place around 10.30am outside the operations cell office of the north district police.

The two Ramjas students were heading to college from their respective homes when the rashly driven Maruti Alto hit them.

The two students did not know each other and were walking separately, said Singh.

“The speeding Alto car first hit constable Mukesh, who was riding a yellow police motorcycle that is part of our Jaguar team. The constable fell off the bike and was injured,” said the additional DCP.

Eyewitnesses told the police that the Alto driver appeared to have panicked after noticing that the motorcycle he rammed was a police bike.

Instead of slowing down, the driver accelerated in his bid to flee, said the police.

“The driver lost control of his speeding car and hit a male pedestrian. It hit another woman a few metres ahead before coming to a halt. The errant driver then abandoned the vehicle and fled by the time locals rushed to help the injured persons,” said a police officer familiar with the accident case.

Additional DCP Singh said the injured male pedestrian and the constable were rushed to Hindu Rao Hospital where doctors pronounced the pedestrian dead on admission.

The wounded woman was admitted to Sushruta Trauma Centre. Their condition of the injured persons was stated to be out of danger, Singh said.

The deceased was identified as Kapil Ratnu, a native of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.

Ratnu was a first-year student of BA programme at Ramjas College. He lived in a rented accommodation in Vijay Nagar area in Maurice Nagar.

His college mate, identified by her single name Jagriti, is a third-year political science student. She too lived in a rented accommodation in Vijay Nagar. Constable Mukesh is posted in the Maurice Nagar police station.

A case of rash and negligent driving causing death and injuries was registered at the Maurice Nagar police station.

“The car is registered in the name of RC Vyas, a resident of Kalyanpuri in east Delhi. Teams have been formed to identify and arrest the person who was behind the wheel at the time of the accident,” added Singh.
