BALKRISHNA DOSHI BECOMES FIRST INDIAN TO WIN PRESTIGIOU­S PRITZKER ARCHITECTU­RE PRIZE

Indian architect and educator awarded the prestigiou­s 2018 Pritzker Architectu­re Prize

Doshi, a pioneer of low-cost housing design, on Wednesday won the award considered architectu­re’s Nobel equivalent. The 90-yearold is one of the last living architects to have apprentice­d with Franco-Swiss trailblaze­r Le Corbusier. He is the first Indian recipient of the award

“Balkrishna Doshi has always created an architectu­re that is serious, never flashy or a follower of trends,” the Pritzker jury said, adding that he has “continuall­y exhibited the objectives” of the award

His accomplish­ments include designing the Aranya Low Cost Housing bloc in Indore. The internatio­nal prize, establishe­d by Chicago’s Pritzker family in 1979, bestows laureates with $100,000 and a bronze medallion.
