BALKRISHNA DOSHI BECOMES FIRST INDIAN TO WIN PRESTIGIOUS PRITZKER ARCHITECTURE PRIZE
Indian architect and educator awarded the prestigious 2018 Pritzker Architecture Prize
Doshi, a pioneer of low-cost housing design, on Wednesday won the award considered architecture’s Nobel equivalent. The 90-yearold is one of the last living architects to have apprenticed with Franco-Swiss trailblazer Le Corbusier. He is the first Indian recipient of the award
“Balkrishna Doshi has always created an architecture that is serious, never flashy or a follower of trends,” the Pritzker jury said, adding that he has “continually exhibited the objectives” of the award
His accomplishments include designing the Aranya Low Cost Housing bloc in Indore. The international prize, established by Chicago’s Pritzker family in 1979, bestows laureates with $100,000 and a bronze medallion.
