GURUGRAM: Around 25 residents of Green Meadows, a gated society in DLF-4, came together on Sunday morning for a plastic clean-up drive. They cleared mounds of waste from vacant plots in their area.
“Most of the empty plots are used as a garbage dump yard. There are hundreds of polythene bags and mounds of construction and demolition (C&D) waste lying on the plots,” said Tara Kartha, a resident.
“Most of the plastic waste being dumped here are single-use polythene bags and used in the packaging of e-retail deliveries,” she said.
The group, which included members of the society’s residents’ welfare association (RWA) and children, divided themselves into teams and went around the block picking up plastic litter.
Ram Keswani, a member of the RWA, said that the issue of littering is omnipresent in the society due to a lack of civic sense. “The plastic waste ends up clogging our drains and leads to severe flooding of roads during the monsoon,” he added.
According to Keswani, there are 85 plots in the society, on which houses have been built on 45 while the rest lie vacant.
“Even though this is the first time people voluntarily came together to clean the plots and remove plastic, a few of us, during our morning walks, would pick up whatever trash we could. We are going to be holding such drives in the future as well,” he added.
In an hour, the residents successfully collected about ten big bags of plastic waste.
