A 28-year-old property dealer was allegedly abducted on Thursday night from south Delhi’s Chhatarpur and held for a ransom of ₹2 lakh by five men, including one of his friend, with whom he had a monetary dispute, the police said.

The police said they managed to nab the men within three hours of the abduction.

DCP (south) Romil Baaniya said the mastermind, Kartik Monga, 19, hatched the kidnapping of Nitin Saini to get back the ₹2 lakh Saini had borrowed a month ago and was not returning despite repeated requests. The other arrested men were identified as Devender alias Goldi,24, Mukesh Verma,22, Pawan Kumar,35, and Yogendra Singh,32.

Baaniya said the crime came to the fore when Saini’s cousin, Rajeev Saini, approached the Safdarjung Enclave police station around 9pm Thursday and filed a complaint about the ransom calls. A case was registered, and during investigation, it was learnt that Nitin had left home around 6pm with his friend Samar. Nitin was last contacted around 8.30pm. “When Rajeev received the extortion call, he tried to contact his cousin but his phone was found to be switched off. The caller had asked him to deliver the money outside a hotel in Chhatarpur,” said an investigator.

When Rajeev reached the spot to drop off the money, he got another call and was asked to come near the Chhatarpur Metro station. “Rajeev handed over the extortion money to a person after which Nitin was released. We nabbed Monga, who collected the money, and his interrogation led to the arrest of the other four. We also recovered ₹1 lakh that Rajeev had paid,” Baaniya said.
