A 22-year-old labourer died while another was critically injured when a pile of mud at a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) construction site collapsed in Buddh Vihar in Northwest Delhi on Friday evening. A case had been registered in the matter.

According to the police, the incident took place around 4pm on Rithala Road. Police said at least 10-12 persons were working at the site where digging was in process.

“While digging, a pile of mud, that had been dug out, collapsed where the labourers were working. Two men, Shiv Dutt (19) and Ravi Kumar (22) were buried under, while others had a close shave. The other labourers immediately informed the contractor who called up the police and rescue was initiated. Disaster management teams and ambulances were also called in,” a senior police officer requesting anonymity, said.

The officer said it took two hours to pull the two men out. “While Kumar was rushed to Bhim Rao Ambedkar hospital, where he was declared dead, Dutt is recuperating at Sanjay Gandhi hospital. Both of them belong to Amroha in Uttar Pradesh. Their families have been informed,” the officer said.
