GURUGURAM: Two men, riding an allegedly stolen motorcycle, were arrested on Wednesday for shooting at and assaulting police officials at a check post near Bar Gujar village in Manesar. An accomplice of theirs who was also riding with them, is still at large. No police officer sustained injuries during the incident.

The arrested men were identified as Junaid Khan (20), from Bharatpur in Rajasthan, and Moseem Khan (27), from Nuh. Police arrested them at the spot and confiscated one pistol, six rounds of live ammunition, one empty bullet shell, two master keys and the motorcycle.

A case was registered against them under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 307 (attempt to murder), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Arms Act at Kherki Daula police station on Wednesday. The suspects were produced in court on Wednesday and sent to police remand.

According to the police, they allegedly received a tip-off on Tuesday night that a man had stolen a motorcycle from Sector 10A and was travelling towards Rajasthan through Mewat to sell it. A team of officials was formed and the police put checkpoints in place at separate locations.

Preet Pal, assistant commissioner of police, crime said, “On Wednesday around 3.40 am, the officials at a check post near Baj Gujar village saw three motorcycle-borne men coming towards them. They signalled them to stop but the men tried to run away.”

Police said when the officials allegedly tried to catch the suspects, Junaid Khan who was riding pillion on the motorcycle, fired a shot that did not hit anyone.

One of the other suspects allegedly bit a police official’s left hand and tried to escape, but was caught.

“The bullet narrowly missed one of the police officials. Junaid and Moseem were arrested from the spot. Their accomplice fled and is still at large. Police are investigating the case. We will also reward head constable Rajat, who gave us information regarding the suspect and fought them bravely,” Pal said.
