WHO IS ASHOK RATHI?
■ Ashok Rathi belonged to a small, Jat-dominated Alipur village, some 2.5km from the Bhondsi police station
■ Rathi did his schooling at the government school for boys, and later attended college in Sohna
■ Things changed once he began college as Rathi got involved with local gangs. Eventually, he dropped out of college and got involved in criminal cases since 1999, the police said
■ In 1999, at the age of 22, Rathi was first booked by the police. Three FIRs were filed against him that year, two for robberies, and one for dacoity
■ By the end of 2001, Rathi was a known criminal in Sohna and Gurugram. Among other charges, he was accused of killing a youth during a robbery at a printing press in Guugram
■ Rathi was convicted in 2014 and has been serving life imprisonment at Bhondsi jail since
■ In November 2015, Sushma, Rathi’s wife, filed an FIR at the Bhondsi police station, alleging that Rathi had called her from prison and threatened to kill her
■ On September 2, 2016, Sushma was shot dead. Bhumi, their daughter, is now living under police protection in the house her parents once shared
■ Rathi confessed to his involvement in getting Sushma killed due to her alleged extramarital
affair
■ A total of 37 cases were registered against him — 35 in Gurugram, one in Meerut and one in Palwal. These include cases of extortion, attempt to murder, and murder. Rathi was cleared in 21 and convicted in four
