TN recoveries hit 200k mark; 109 deaths in a day raise concerns

CHENNAI: Maintainin­g its robust recovery of Covid-19 patients, Tamil Nadu on Monday saw the cumulative discharges crossing the 200,000 mark, while the recovery rate stood at a healthy 76%. The daily deaths breached the 100 mark for the first time, with 109 people succumbing to the infection.

The state recorded 5,609 new cases on Monday, taking the total to 263,222, a health department bulletin said. Monday’s number was lower than Sunday, when the state reported 5,875 new coronaviru­s cases. Among the new cases, 32 were returnees from domestic and overseas travels.

As many as 109 people died, with the toll mounting to 4,241, the bulletin said.

On Monday, 5,800 people were discharged, eclipsing the new cases and taking the total recoveries to 202,283.

The active cases in the state stood at 56,698, the bulletin said. Tamil Nadu is the second state to cross the 200,000 mark in recoveries after Maharashtr­a, although the latter’s case tally is much over 400,000.

Chennai registered 1,021 new cases, taking its tally to 102,985. According to the bulletin, as many as 58,211 samples were tested on Monday, while the overall testing figure stood at 2,837,000.

According to the bulletin, seven of the 109 patients who succumbed to the virus did not have comorbidit­ies. Among those with comorbidit­es, an eight-year-old girl from the city with acute liver failure and a 17-year-old boy died due to multiple organ dysfunctio­n syndrome, the bulletin said.

Among the 109 deaths, as many as 70 were aged above 60 years. Chennai has so far reported the most fatalities, with 2,176 deaths, followed by Chengalpet (262), Thiruvallu­r (258) and Madurai (257). Nilgiris has the least number of fatalities in the state, with two deaths reported so far, according to the health bulletin.
