GURUGRAM: The district administration on Monday advised the residents of Gurugram to opt for cash on delivery option for online shopping, instead of using credit or debit cards, after it received hundreds of complaints on cyber fraud cases.

The administration has launched a campaign to educate people about the same, and have asked victims of cyber fraud cases to report the incidents immediately over 1930 — the national cyber crime helpline number. The initiative was taken in a bid to curb the increasing number of cyber crime cases in the district, said the officials.

Gurugram deputy commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav said that complaints over the helpline number will enable the authorities to stop the financial transaction in real-time.

“People nowadays prefer online shopping, and fall prey to different modus operandi of conmen... First ensure that the website being used is secure and then only go opt for online transactions. I would request the people to choose cash on delivery option while ordering goods from online sites, so that their details of credit or debit cards are safe and secure,” Yadav said.

The Union home ministry in February this year developed “a new system to generate realtime alerts about cyber fraud incidents, which also stops transfer of stolen money in the suspect’s account and helps to trace the suspect in real-time”, said the officials.

According to the police, fraud cases have increased in the past two years, and at least 30 people are duped across the district every day.
