GURUGRAM: A joint raid by the chief minister’s flying squad and Gurugram police on Friday led to the arrest of two people for running illegal parking lots. Both individuals were apprehended from Sector 65 after complaints were received that several illegal parking lots were being run on government plots.

Police said most of these illegal operators were found charging car owners ₹50 for using these spots. The raids are part of a crackdown on illegal activities being carried out in government plots.

Inderjeet Yadav, deputy superintendent of police (DSP), said “Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar has asked to ensure no illegal activities are carried out on government lands following which action is being taken against people who have encroached vacant properties.”

Yadav further added that police are working towards ensuring no illegal parking spaces are operational in the city and that no extortion racket is being run in their respective jurisdictions. A senior police official said that strict action will also be taken against negligent station house officers.

A joint team of the CM’s flying squad, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and police also visited an area in Sector 59 on Friday.

Yadav informed that a stretch of GMDA land, adjacent to a commercial complex, was being run as an illegal parking lot. “The operators who have been apprehended occupied a government green belt in Sector 59. The raiding team found that the parking lot was running to full capacity,” he said.

Harish Budhiraja, inspector, chief minister’s flying squad, said that about 80 vehicles were parked in the area at the time of the raid. The illegal operators had printed parking slips and were charging vehicle owners for using the space.

Three of the apprehended operators have been identified as Chetan and Navdeep Wasian of Kadarpur village, and Ghansi Singh of Bihar. During questioning, they revealed that they work for one Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Kadarpur.

“Kumar used to identify vacant plots owned by civic agencies and run them as parking lots. A case was registered against them at Sector 65 police station,” Budhiraja added.
