MCG monitors vehicles carrying mixed waste
The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) teams on Monday penalised five vehicles of private waste collectors carrying mixed waste from commercial establishments in Sector 29 and Palam Vihar area, said officials, adding that they have deployed six teams that patrolled at least 25 areas on Monday. The five vehicles were identified by these teams based on complaints received from waste collectors.
MCG joint commissioner Naresh Kumar said despite regular awareness campaigns and drives conducted across the city,
people are still not segregating waste. “After facing challenges for over a month, the situation in residential areas has become better but in commercial establishments, people are still flouting norms,” he said.
Kumar said on Monday their teams caught at least five private waste collectors from Sector 29 and Palam Vihar area who were on their way to dump mixed waste in public places. “We have penalised them ₹3,500 each and they were asked to segregate the waste and dump it at the Carterpuri material recovery facility. The teams will keep a close check on their movements as they were involved in the same offence several times. The waste they were carrying was taken from prominent restaurants on Monday,” he said.
Civic officials have already mapped over 500 garbage vulnerable points across the city, which have turned into dump yards ever since the civic agencies started lifting mixed waste from November 21. Teams have been deployed to check these sites to ensure that the areas are clean and clear, said officials.
MCG has already fined at least 12 establishments on Saturday and Sunday for dumping mixed waste. The corporation had issued directions to its sanitation wing and door-to-door waste collection concessionaire Ecogreen to ensure that they collect only segregated waste from November 21.
A month-long awareness drive was launched across the city to make citizens aware of the change and sensitise them on the need to segregate waste at home.
