Four held for firing incident

NAWANSHAHR: The district police have arrested four persons in connection with the February 2 incident in which a man was seriously injured after being shot at by truck-borne persons.

Those arrested have been identified as Lavinder Singh of Sarabha Nagar, Phagwara; Ranjit Singh of Baweli in Kapurthala; Jaspal Singh of Ahmadgarh in Sangrur and Kuljit Singh of Fatehgarh Sahib.

Giving details at a press conference here on Wednesday, Ropar DIG Naresh Arora said that Lavinder had hired Ranjit, Jaspal and Kuljit to kill Rakesh Kumar Rattewal.

Profession­al rivalry between Lavinder and Rakesh led to the crime as both worked as transport and labour contractor­s. Lavinder was angry as he lost a contact to Rakesh and decided to get the latter eliminated. He paid Rs 50,000 to Ranjit, Jaspal and Kuljit to kill Rakesh.

On the day the crime was committed, the trio followed Rakesh’s car from Phagwara and shot at him near Bullewal Khurd.

Rakesh’s brother-in-law Satnam Singh had lodged a police complaint with in this regard on February 3, after which police registered a case under sections 341,307, 34 of IPC and 25, 54, 59 of Arms Act at Balachaur police station.

Rakesh is currently undergoing treatment at PGI, Chandigarh.

The DIG said the district police first arrested Lavinder Singh. The police also recovered two cartridges and the truck (PB07E-6383) used in the crime. His interrogat­ion led to the arrest of other three accused.

The police recovered a .315 bore country-made pistol, three cartridges and Rs 15,000 from Jaspal Singh; Rs 20,000 and an Alto car (PB-09H-8895) from Ranjit Singh and Rs 15,000 from Kuljit Singh. Another accomplice of the accused is still absconding.
