KULLU: At a time when the opposition party in Himachal is grappling with infighting, the scion of Nehru-Gandhi family and the All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary, Rahul Gandhi gave lessons of unity to party leaders.

Gandhi was here to attend a training session of Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC). A party leader said most block presidents had told Rahul that it would be impossible to win elections, if Virbhadra was not given full command. Rahul was also concerned over the low participation of women.

KULLU: At the time when the opposition party in Himachal is grappling with infighting, the scion of Nehru-Gandhi family and the All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary, Rahul Gandhi gave lessons of unity to party leaders.

Gandhi was here to attend a training session of Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) and other frontal organisations of the party.

Gandhi presided over a meeting of District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents, Block Congress Committee (BCC) and later addressed the delegates from all the 68 blocks and stressed upon strengthening the party at block level.

Urging the party leaders and workers to unite for the upcoming elections, Gandhi said the party was sitting in opposition because of internal squabbles.

“If this internal strife continues we will not be able to come into power,” said Gandhi.

He said due consideration should be given to grassroots party workers. Giving tips to state leaders and party workers to ensure party’s win in the assembly elections, Gandhi said that the local leaders in a particular constituency should be given priority while distributing party ticket and there should be no place for “parachuters”.

“I reiterate that grassroots leaders should be given respect. Whenever a party worker or DCC or BCC president says something, the party leaders should listen,” said Gandhi.

“When this culture begins in Congress, BJP will be nowhere in the upcoming elections,” he said. Rahul Gandhi said party workers should also identify their rights. “As we have fundamental rights and duties in our constitution, we also have the same in Congress. When you are performing your duties, you should also understand your rights,” said Gandhi.

Maintaining that early preparation for the polls will work in party’s favour, Gandhi said, “If we declare the party candidates early, we will win.”
