SC WANTS REPORT ON SALE OF ACID

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court asked for a comprehens­ive affidavit from the ministry of home affairs with regard to measures taken by it to regulate sale of acids. The SC had directed states to take ‘proper action’ to prevent acids from being misused as a weapon against women. The bench of justices also asked the states to file details of measures they had taken to restrict sale of acids in response to notices issued in early February 2011.

Railway fare hike stalled till September

NEW DELHI: In response to railway minister Mukul Roy’s demand for a complete exemption of the railways from service tax, the finance ministry has suspended imposition of the tax till September 30. The decision has stayed the anticipate­d increase in freight charges and passenger fares of the AC and First class.

Paramilita­ry forces to guard SAIL mining project

NEW DELHI: The Centre has agreed to post paramilita­ry forces to guard the Rowghat iron ore mines owned by Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) that feeds Bhillai steel plant. SAIL requested for 5,000 personnel to guard the plant allegedly from Naxals. The security personnel will help in constructi­on of a 235km-long railway track for transporti­ng ore slurry through the Naxal-hit Kanker and Narayanpur.

Two more die on way to Amarnath shrine

SRINAGAR: Two Amarnath pilgrims died of cardiac arrest on Sunday taking the toll this year to 22. Both the piligrims were in their mid-thirties. While Anita Chourasiya was on her way to the shrine, Sadhu Ram was returning to the Pahalgam base camp.
