NEW DELHI: A day after NDA’s stunning victory in the Lok Sabha polls 2014, there are speculations in legal circles about possible contenders who are likely replace top law officers of the outgoing UPA government.

In tune with a time honoured practice, the law officers of the Congress-led UPA-II government — Attorney General GE Vahanvati, solicitor general Mohan Parasaran and additional solicitor generals — are expected to resign to make way for a legal team to be picked by the Narendra Modi-led new NDA government.

But legal circles are already abuzz with reports that two of India’s prominent senior advocates —Harish Salve and Mukul Rohtagi — are serious contenders for the post of Attorney General of India.

Salve could not be contacted. But when asked how he felt about the media reports claiming he was a contender for the AG’s post, Rohatgi told Hindustan Times, “If it is offered, I’ll be happy to take a call.”

And for the post of solicitor general, senior advocate Ranjit Kumar has emerged as a top contender.

Both Rohtagi and Kumar have been consistently appearing on behalf of the Modi goverment in the Supreme Court for over a decade.

They are considered to be close to the saf fron party.
