Ultra modern CANCER treatment Project in SGRD Institute of Medical Sciences & Research

- by Dr. A.P. Singh, Addl. Secretary Trust,

- A gift to humanity by SGPC & Badal Family.

C ancer is growing among the public at a very higher rate in India and it is desirable to give quality treatment to the cancer patient at affordable rates. Taking into consideration all these things SGPC has undertook responsibility to fulfill this cause on the humanitarian grounds, and sufficient steps have been taken by Jathedar Avtar Singh with the proper guidelines of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. It is quite clear that this project is due to the farsighted vision of Badal family due to whom advice President Avtar Singh Makkar gave final shape for installation of this one of the very latest "Triple Energy Linear Accelerator" in Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Science & Research, Vallah; which will be boon for doing precise treatment of Cancer not only for patients not from Punjab but also for other surrounding states. This hospital is a referral centre for patients not only from Punjab but also for other states such as Haryana, Himachal Pradesh & Jammu & Kashmir. The hospital has Co-60 teletherapy & HDR (High Dose Rate) and Brachytherapy unit in Cancer department. It has well qualified & experienced consultants and team of Medical Physicists & BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre) approved Radiation therapy Technologists & qualified nursing staff for providing oncology services. It is treating 70-80 patients daily of external beam radiotherapy & 2-3 patients daily of Brachytherapy. This institution is dedicated to the selfless service of the poor cancer patients who can't bear the cost of such advanced & conformal treatments. The approximate cost of this new project is 16 crores which includes a highly equipped Triple Energy Linear accelerator, specialized concrete housing (bunker) for the linear accelerator machine, trainings for all the radiotherapy personnels, specialized dosimetery system for maintaining quality standards of treatment according to AERB recommendations & CT simulator for simulating treatments. With recent advances in clinical practice to push the limits of accuracy to a better sphere there is great need of newer treatment techniques & this machine is in compliance with all these requirements. This Linear Accelerator is superior as compared to the earlier existing machines (Co-60). Our Elekta Triple Energy Linear Accelerator is equipped with triple photon energies, seven electron energies, Multi leaf collimators & latest modalities such as 3-DCRT (3-Dimensional conformal radiation therapy), IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy), 4D-IGRT ( Image Guided Radiation Therapy), VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Are Therapy ) also it is upgradable to SRS (Sterotactic Radio Surgery) & SRT ( Sterotactic Radio Therapy). In Addition to it, Specialised Dosimetry from Iba Dosimetry systems (Rosalina instruments) which includes highly advanced RFA (Radiation field Analyser) blue phantom, IMRT QA tools such as 3-D Compass pro & other necessary equipment, which will help us to raise the standards of treatment delivery. Latest computerized planning system such as Monaco & Oncentra which will help us to better analyse & enhance the quality of treatment. Highly efficient dedicated CT Simulator with all latest applications needed for oncology practices, which will help us for doing accurate treatment simulation before the treatment. The main advantageous of this project are that earlier patients of this region used to go to other Private centres for better conformal treatment such as IMRT & IGRT, VMAT, once it becomes operational, After its installation our esteemed institution will become a premier Medical Institution in Punjab for diagnosis & treatment of cancer at affordable rates & will be at par with all the renewed cancer research institutes in North India.
