Classes 10, 12 board exams: Govt schools fail to produce results in Haryana

Only 30.32% govt school students clear Class 10 exams, 51.57% in Class 12

ROHTAK: The Haryana government’s claims of overhauling the education structure in the state notwithstanding, the government-run schools have fared badly in the secondary and senior secondary exams conducted by the Haryana Board of School Education (HBSE), results of which were declared on Wednesday.

The government-run schools have reported a pass percentage of 30.32% in the secondary (Class 10) exams compared to private schools which have shown a pass percentage of 53.61%. Even the governmentaided schools have performed better than the government schools by recording a pass percentage of 49.21%.

In the senior secondary exams, the government schools have recorded a pass percentage of 51.57% as against 55.69% in private schools.

However, several reasons are being given behind the poor results in the governmentrun schools as an official of the Haryana Board of School Education puts it: “We did not give any grace marks to the students this year as was the practice in the past. But even the students of private schools did not get grace marks, then why have they performed well?”

“This is the worst result in the past five years and we need to do a lot to improve the education system in government schools,” said a state education department official.

This is despite the state gov- ernment spending crores of rupees on scholarships, books and other facilities to improve enrolment in gover nment schools. However, schools in education minister Ram Bilas Sharma’s Mahendergarh district have topped the secondary and senior secondary exams with the district recording a pass percentage of 60.65% in senior secondary exams and 56.33% in secondary exams. Girls have again outshone boys in Classes 10 and 12 exams. However, the overall result in both examinations were below expectations as only 41.28% students cleared the Class 10 exams and 53.96% students Class 12 exams. The overall pass percentage of girl students was 64.57% as against 45.88% of boys in Class 12 exams. The highest pass percentage was in the science stream at 59.61%, followed by commerce at 53.39%. The arts stream recorded the lowest pass percentage at 51.72%.

The girls are also ahead of boys in the Class 10 exams with a pass percentage of 44.62% as against 38.44% of the boys. The girls also improved the overall percentage to 41.28%, but it is still far below the expectations.
