CHANDIGARH: BJP national secretary Tarun Chugh has slammed SAD leader and Rajya Sabha member Naresh Gujral for his “arrogant” remark against the BJP and alleged that he was bent upon weakening the alliance between the two parties.

Chugh was reacting to Gujral’s remarks where he had said that the BJP did not consult its allies on the issue of land bill.

“Gujral neither knows the facts nor understands the sanctity of the relationship between the BJP and the SAD. It would have been better had Gujral asked the BJP leadership and chief minister Parkash Singh Badal before issuing a statement aimed at damaging the alliance,” Chugh said, adding that Badal had been hailing the BJP and union ministers for cooperating with Punjab.

Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, during their visits to the capital and meetings with the union ministers, have been heard on the issues of Punjab and funds of hundreds and thousands of crores have been already been sanctioned to the state for development, Chugh said.

Reacting to Gujral’s remarks, Chugh said Gujral must know that the land ordinance and bill were duly approved by the union cabinet, which included SAD representative Harsimrat Kaur Badal.

Gujral told HT that he didn’t want to reply to a leader of Chugh’s level and would talk to senior BJP leaders. He explained that the bill needed a rethink.

“Ours is a party of farmers and we don’t want them to suffer. We also want the BJP to adopt the land acquisition policy of Punjab so that farmers across the country should get profarmer treatment,” said Gujral.
