101 guest teachers get tonsured as their protest enters second day
KARNAL: Alleging bias on part of the Haryana government, 101 male guest teachers got their heads tonsured in protest against the non-fulfillment of their demands here on Saturday.
This was part of the second day of the indefinite protest by the Haryana Guest Teachers Association.
The protesting teachers said that the fate of 15,000 guest teachers working for the past several years in the state’s schools was hanging in balance as the government had planned to start recruitment of teachers on a large scale.
“We are only getting assurances but the official procedure has not started as yet. We will continue to shave heads as a symbol of protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party government,” said association president Rajinder Sharma Shastri.
A large number of teachers from across the state including women are protesting in Karnal, the home constituency of the chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar. On Friday night, the protesters were asked by the local administration to wind up the protest as they did not have any permission to continue. Protesters spent night at the protest site. Following an assurance by the association leaders that the protesters would not lead to any law and order situation, the administration allowed them to hold a dharna on Saturday as well. However, the authorities had cordoned off the protest site near Sector 12 as the CM was in Karnal for several public functions.
