KARNAL: Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar said that three social schemes launched nationwide on Saturday would prove a milestone in ensuring social security for the poorest people in the country.

At a function held at the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) this evening for the state level function, Khattar said the convenient delivery mechanism of the schemes would address the problem of a very low penetration of life or accident insurance and old age income security products in the country.

Khattar said that Haryana had already 12 lakh beneficiaries under these welfare programmes.

On the occasion, the speech of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi was webcast live from Kolkata where the social welfare schemes were formally launched.

Khattar said while two insurance schemes - the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana ( PMSBY) and the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) would provide insurance cover in the unfortunate event of death by any cause or disability due to an accident, the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) would address the income and security needs of the aged. ‘PAYMENT TO CANE GROWERS IN A MONTH’

Khattar said that the state government was aware of the problems of cane growers and a policy has been formulated for time-bound payment to farmers.

“We have earmarked a sum of `290 crore for various cooperative sugar mills for the timely payment. The cane commissioner has been directed to ensure payment to farmers within a period of one month,” he said.

Khattar said that the government had even offered the private sugar mills to get interest-free loans from the state for payments but all of them had assured to clear farmers’ dues without any financial support from the state exchequer.

On the occasion, union minister of state for foreign affairs Gen VK Singh (retd) asked the official machinery to create mass awareness of the scheme. He urged the public to enrol themselves for these schemes to lead a life of dignity in the advanced age.
