Three swept away in flash floods in Kullu valley

KULLU/SHIMLA: Three persons were washed away by strong water current as rains wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh on Thursday night triggering landslides and disrupting traffic.

The incident took place in Manihar forest area in Garsa valley of Kullu district. According to reports, six labourers, working for a forest corporatio­n contractor, were putting up in a shed at Manihar Jhuni forest beat when they were washed away in flash floods.

However, three of them managed to save their lives. The police said the body of one of the victims, identified as 18-year-old Viki of Shilai in Sirmaur district of Himacahl Pradesh, was recovered from a nullah a few meters from the spot.

Meanwhile, five houses have been damaged due to heavy rain in the Manikaran area of Kullu district. The downpour also hampered the power generation in the state-run 126 MW Larji Hydroelect­ric Project on Friday morning. However, the generation resumed within three hours. The National Highway 5 remained blocked for over 12 hours at Neugalseri in Kinnaur district due to a massive landslide.

WOMAN, SON BURIED ALIVE IN BADDI SOLAN: A 21-year-old woman and her nine-month-old son were buried alive as a boundary wall of an industrial unit collapsed due to rain at Lodi Majra village near the industrial township Baddi on Thursday evening. The deceased were identified as Alemarry and her son Durga, residents of Jharkhand. The victims were in their makeshift hut when the mishap took place. The bodies were taken to the Nalagarh civil hospital for postmortem.

Besides triggering landslides, flash floods in Ashwani River also washed away a temporary bridge constructe­d at Sadhupul that connects Chail with Kandahgat.
