Congress tries to cash in on scam
BHOPAL: The Congress’ is trying to cash in on the Vyapam scam, especially in light of its repeated electoral dubbing at the hands of the ruling BJP in Madhya Pradesh.
The multi-layered examination and recruitment scam has turned out to be the biggest in state and one of the largest in the country.
The state-wide bandh called by the Congress in protest against the Vyapam scandal on Thursday, was termed a ‘success’ by the party, even as the BJP declared it ‘anti-constitution, anti-moral and anti-people’.
For the first time, the state saw a clutch of ‘Pro-BJP” traders’ bodies issuing full-page advertisements in leading dailies appealing people to not support the bandh call.
Since the Congress had little time to galvanise its workers to ensure a total bandh, it depended on a ‘limited version’ with shops and business establishments being asked to close from morning to noon.
Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh, who had led the bandh, in a tweet said the traders who defied the shutdown call, were pressurised by the state government.
BJP state president Nandkumar Singh Chauhan, however, dubbed the bandh as a “flop”.
Meanwhile, the Congress in New Delhi announced it would bring up the scam in the upcoming session of Parliament.
The party’s chief whip in the Lower House, Jyotiraditya Scindia, accused the state of inaction in probing the “massive irregularities” related to scam. “We believe that the delay has been caused on part of the state government’s inaction... Those who gave bribes are in jail, but those who took the bribes are still free,” said Scindia.
