JAMMU: Five people were injured when Pakistan troops fired along the line of control (LoC) in Shahpur and Kasba areas of the Poonch district on Saturday. Pakistan had earlier fired in the Rajouri distict.

“The injured have been shifted to the Poonch district hospital by the police. The firing was continuing when the last reports came in,” said Poonch senior superintendent of police (SSP) SS Johar.

“Pakistan troops started firing in the Pooch sector at 1.45 pm with small arms and then fired mortar shells and also rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) at forward posts. The army also fired back and firing was continuing,” said the defence spokesperson.

These are Muslim majority areas, where people were celebrating Eid on Saturday.

The army had foiled an infiltration bid in the Shahpur area last Sunday by killing an infiltrator. Heavy arms and ammunition were recovered from his possession.

Pakistan earlier fired along the LoC in the Nowshera sector in Rajouri district, 150-km from Jammu. Defence spokesperson said Pakistan resorted to firing in Nowshera about 9.25 pm last night and the intermittent firing continued till 12 am early Saturday morning. The army also fired back.

According to defence sources, the firing was started by Pakistan to facilitate infiltration.

The latest incident of firing happened when Eid is being celebrated across Jammu and Kashmir, which is the only Muslim majority state in the country.

A woman had died and eight others, including two BSF jawans, were injured in Pakistani firing on July 15 and July 16.

The Pakistani media had reported death of four civilians in firing by the BSF in the Sialkot area across the RS Pura sector.
