AMRITSAR: As the special team investigating the killing of local Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Mukhjit Singh “Mukha” in a police encounter is yet to submit its report even after a month, the Akali leader’s family on Saturday met state revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia to seek his intervention.

The special investigation team ( SIT) led by inspector general of police (crime) Nageshwar Rao was formed after the Amritsar police shot down Mukha after reportedly mistaking him for gangster Jaggu. Mukha was president of the Ward 16 unit of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) here. As the local police came into the firing line of the ruling party, Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal visited Mukha’s family and promised it justice.

Mukha was killed outside Amritsar’s Mudhal village near Verka on June 16. A month on, there is no sign of the promised SIT report. The Akali leader’s family told Majithia on Saturday that it wants severe punishment for the policemen involved in the encounter. District SAD (urban) president Upkar Singh Sandhu, who had threatened to go on agitation if the SIT didn’t submit his report in time, took the family to the minister. He has questioned the manner of function of the city police and demanded investigation against its cyber cell.

“Majithia has assured justice to the family, and tough action against any cop found at fault in the encounter case,” said Sandhu. Even when the SIT repo2rt is pending, the Amritsar police commissioner has recommended suspension order for a sub-inspector and an assistant sub-inspector from the anti-narcotic team that had intercepted Mukha on June 16.
