JALANDHAR: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member and president of Shiromani Akali Dal (Panch Pardhani) Kulbir Singh Barapind was arrested by Jalandhar rural police from his house at Barapind village of the district on Sunday.

The Goraya police, under whose jurisdiction Barapind village falls, said the former militant was produced before the Phillaur sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) and was sent to the Kapurthala jail till July 25.

The police officials said it was a preventive detention to stop him from taking part in any kind of protest in support of Bhai Surat Singh Khalsa (75) who has been on a hunger (no solid food) strike since January 16 in Ludhiana, demanding the release of Sikh prisoners lodged in various jails.

The rural police have also rounded up three other Sikh hardliners from various locations, but no official confirmation was made about this.
