BATHINDA: United Akali Dal (UAD) leader Gurdeep Singh Bathinda, convener of Bandi Singh Rihai Sangharsh Committee formed to support Surat Singh Khalsa in his hunger strike for the release of Sikhs who have completed their jail terms, was on Sunday arrested here.

He was caught at a police checkpoint on the MaloutMukt­sar road bisection around 2.30pm while on his way from his village, Burj Mehma, with a driver.

Confirming the developmen­t, Bathinda senior superinten­dent of police (SSP) Inder Mohan Singh Bhatti said the arrest was a preventive measure under Sections 107 (abetment) and 151 (joining an assembly that has been commanded to disperse) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the UAD leader would be produced before the duty magistrate on Monday. HTC SGPC MEMBER BARAPIND ALSO ARRESTED JALANDHAR: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member and Shiromani Akali Dal (Panch Pardhani) president Kulbir Singh Barapind was arrested by Jalandhar rural police from his house at Barapind village of the district on Sunday. The police officials said it was a preventive detention to stop him from taking part in any kind of protest in support of Surat Singh Khalsa. HTC
