Nine years on, Nurmahal police station building still incomplete
NURMAHAL: Even as local residents donated over six kanals of land for constructing the building of Nurmahal police station in 2006 besides spending `25 lakh, the authorities concerned have not been able complete work on it.
The police station was housed in a private building then.
Moreover, the residents have written to the government for the transfer of the common land to the police department several times, but the land could not be mutated.
A local social worker filed a writ petition in the high court in 2012 demanding that the authorities concerned be asked to issue notification under sections 4 and 6 of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, to acquire the land. The then acting chief justice Jasbir Singh and Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain dismissed the petition.
Nurmahal nagar council in its meeting in June 2012 passed a unanimous resolution for transferring the land to the police department for the construction of the building.
In 2012, the residents brought the issue to the notice of the director local government and the administrative sectary local government besides principal sectary, local government, Punjab.
They also brought it to the notice of chief secretary, Punjab, and chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to give approval to the resolution so that mutation of land could be sanctioned, but of no avail.
“The council had passed a resolution for transferring the land to the police department, which is pending for approval with the director local bodies. I will write to the director local bodies for approving the resolution,” Nurmahal nagar council president Jagat Mohan Sharma said.
“The construction of barracks for policemen, a boundary wall, flooring and parking space for impounded vehicles are need on the hour. I have urged Nurmahal municipal committee to cooperate in completing building,” Nurmahal station house officer (SHO) Ganga Singh said.
Bainapur village panchayat member Jaspal Singh said the government should take steps to complete building at the earliest.
